What are Terpenes?

For most of us, the term terpenes is unfamiliar and new, even though we are

surrounded by them. They are the substances that affect our senses: they whet our appetite and trigger pleasant emotions, treat certain conditions, they soothe us and cheer us up. Terpenes are the culprits behind pleasant smells that overwhelm the kitchen when we squeeze a fresh orange or open a glass of

blueberry jam. They are what makes lavender and roses special. Terpenes give plants their aroma, taste and colour. Terpenes are chemical compounds, naturally present in plants and they contribute to the plants’ unique taste, smell and colour. Scientists have so far identified over 20,000 different terpenes.

They are the basic elements in essential oils and are frequently used in food additives, perfumery and aromatherapy. There is also increasing talk of their medicinal properties in correlation to various health issues.

Hemp contains over 200 different terpenes.

In recent years, talk of the positive effects of the hemp plant has become increasingly frequent. More and more scientific studies confirm its effect on skin problems, autoimmune diseases, the immune system, rheumatic disease, insomnia and other health problems. Most frequently mentioned active ingredients in cannabis are THC and CBD, with the latter being

an active ingredient in hemp and therefore legal for production in certain countries. In addition to these substances, naturally occurring terpenes represent an important part of the cannabis plant.

So far, over 200 different terpenes have been discovered in hemp and about 60 of them are being closely examined in scientific circles. Research into the effects terpenes have on skin conditions and various health problems is opening new possibilities in the fields of treatments with hemp plants.

What Terpenes do we use in our products?

LINALOOL

This terpene is responsible for the characteristic scent of lavender and is in varying concentrations also present in numerous other flowers. It is popular for its soothing effect and is most commonly used to treat anxiety. In addition, it also displays anti-inflammatory properties.

CARYOPHYLLENE

This terpene, which has a spicy, woody, peppery scent, is also found in black pepper and cinnamon. Studies indicate that this one small terpene is capable of performing the big job of treating anxiety, depression, and inflammation.

MYCENE

Myrcene is one of the most common terpenes and can be found in almost all varieties of cannabis. It is also present elsewhere in nature, where it, among other things, gives bay leaves, thyme, and parsley their characteristic scent. This terpene is known for its earthy, grassy taste. It has also proved effective in relieving muscle cramps and treating insomnia and is valued for its anti-inflammatory properties.

LIMONENE

A frequent terpene with a characteristic citrus scent that is also present in large quantities in lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. Research shows that D-limonene terpene displays antibacterial activity and it has also been associated with inhibiting the development of cancer cells in clinical studies.

A-PINENE

If you enjoy the scent of the pine tree, you can thank the alpha-pinene terpene for it. This terpene is present in almost all varieties of cannabis as well as in rosemary, pine, and many other plants. It is frequently used to open bronchial tubes and to relieve various breathing problems, and studies have shown that it is also effective in treating intestinal problems.

GERANOIL

A rose scented terpene which has a variety of medicinal and therapeutic uses as well. It’s a natural antioxidant that has anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties that can be useful in treating many different types of cancer. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that can help reduce infections.

Geraniol has also shown to be effective at inhibiting the growth of certain types of fungus, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and have a lot of potential as a neuroprotectant.

Does CBD with terpenes get you high?

Terpenes are not psychoactive like THC is. This means alone, terpenes cannot give you that high feeling.

How do I give my dog the oil?

It is best to squirt the oil directly into the side of his mouth, it will absorb much faster. If this is not an option, just put the drops on top of their food, on a piece of bread or a treat you know they like, but make sure they eat it all. See how he responds.

General CBD Dosage Guideline

CBD dosage is calculated by the weight of the animal. For instance, you are not going to treat a small Yorkie, the same as you would a Great Dane.

If you find the dog is abnormally lethargic, then lower the dose or spread it out further throughout the day. It is perfectly fine to do that. If you don’t see any improvement, then up the dosage by half a dropper full each time.

You just have to find the right dosage for your dog or cat and that can be a trial and error for a couple of days, until you see they are responding well.

How much Tincture do I give my dog?

This is our dose guideline:

Pure CBD Tincture - 300mg CBD, 30ml Bottle

1ml dropper (10mg CBD) = 1 full dropper (pipette). The dropper generally only goes half way up, so double up on the dose, if need be

  • <10kg 1/4 dropper, twice a day
  • 10-30Kg 1/2 dropper, twice a day
  • >30Kg Give 2-3 full dropper, twice a day

Broad Spectrum Tincture - 600mg CBD, 30ml Bottle, 1ml dropper (20mg CBD)

  • <10kg 1/4 dropper, daily
  • <30Kg 1/2 dropper, daily
  • >30Kg 1 dropper, daily

All dogs are different, some need a lot less and some need a lot more. We always recommend starting on a lower dose and building up to the recommended dose.

It takes time to get the dose correct for each animal. One should adjust the dosage accordingly, until you find the dog/cat is reacting well and you see the desired effect taking place. Should there be no change, the dosage should be increased, should the animal be abnormally lethargic, the dose should be decreased.

How many treats do I give my dog?

We always recommend to start off giving less and build up to the recommended amount and desired effect. Again, all dogs are different and some may need more, some less, in order to achieve the desired effect.

There are 15 Treats in a bag (+-175g). Each treat contains 5mg CBD (which is a relatively high amount). They can be broken in half for smaller dosage.

  • <10kg 1⁄2 a treat, twice a day
  • <20Kg 1 treat, twice a day
  • <30Kg 2 treats, twice a day
  • >40kg + - 3 treats, twice a day

How much Tincture do I give my cat?

We always recommend to start off giving less and build up to the recommended amount and desired effect. Increase the dose if necessary.

Pure CBD Tincture - 100mg CBD, 20ml Bottle, 1ml dropper (5mg CBD)

3-5mg of Tincture, per 4.5kg of body weight. 3-5 drops from the dropper, twice a day.

Broad Spectrum Tincture - 200mg CBD, 30ml Bottle, 1ml dropper (10mg CBD)

3-5mg of Tincture, per 4.5kg of body weight. 3-5 drops from the dropper, once a day.

Are your products certified?

Yes, all of our CBD products are all third party certified and carry a Certificate of Analysis. At From The Barkery, we manufacture all of our own products in Cape Town. Our CBD is imported from the USA and carries a Certificate of Analysis.

We do not purchase pre-made lab products. That way, we know exactly what goes into our products, how they are made and know that our furries are getting an excellent quality product.

We have been manufacturing CBD products for animals for many years and From The Barkery was the original company in South Africa to manufacture.

What are the benefits of giving CBD products to my dog or cat?

CBD can be very effective in treating animals with pain and inflammation, anxiety, separation anxiety, seizures, epilepsy, cancers, tumours, arthritis, skin conditions, as well as allergies.

How much CBD is in one dog treat?

5mg CBD per treat.

Do your CBD products contain THC?

No, none of our products contain any THC. THC, in large doses, can be toxic to animals. All of our products are formulated for animals and are not Full Spectrum.

Does CBD cause liver damage?

The liver is an essential detoxifying organ with many important functions in the optimum functioning of an animal's body. It plays a role in metabolism, digestion and detoxification. It is a unique organ being the only organ that is able to regenerate. In recent studies, reports were shown to show elevated liver enzymes in mice that were given incredibly abnormal, large doses of CBD. Meaning CBD can, if taken in high enough amounts, inhibit the body's enzymes to metabolise certain pharmaceutical drugs, although the effects have been shown to be minimal. The elevated enzyme levels will cease, as soon as the CBD passes through the body.

On the up side, in other recent reports, the endocannabinoid system and its receptors have been shown to be a potential target for treatment of liver diseases. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system and does have therapeutic properties including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-modulatory properties, which can be helpful in liver diseases. The bottom line is that if given extremely high doses, CBD could have the potential to cause liver damage. That is why it is important to only recommend a CBD product, that is specially formulated for dogs or cats, third part laboratory tested and of excellent known quality.

Human CBD products generally contain much higher doses, including THC and that is not known to be as safe for everyday consumption, for our animals. It is relatively unknown at this point in time of the long term side effects, however the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile.

It is always a good thing to recommend to your customers to chat with their Vet, if they have any concerns and always to notify their Vet that their pets are taking CBD.

Will my pet get high from taking this product?

No, not a chance. There are zero psychoactive ingredients in our products, therefore making it impossible to get high from any From The Barkery products.

My dog has allergies and is allergic to wheat, can they be made gluten free?

The CBD treats are not gluten or wheat free, however, some of our furry clients that have allergies, have found they can still take the treats and that their skin conditions (itchiness, dryness, flaking) has actually improved. Alternatively, recommend the Pet Tincture or peanut butter, instead of the treats.

Do you have any wheat free treats?

Yes, the Charcoal, Parsley and Peppermint and Turmeric and Sweet Potato Treats are wheat and gluten free. We can make all our other flavours to be wheat and gluten free, by special order.

Which one do I choose for my pet?

Both our tinctures have excellent qualities for cats and dogs. The Pure CBD Tincture is mixed with specific quality terpenes shown to benefit cats and dogs. The two tinctures, one for cats and one for dogs are formulated differently and contain different CBD strengths.

We would recommend the Pure CBD for smaller dogs and cats who have anxieties, arthritis, skin conditions, allergies, ageing and general wellbeing.

The Broad Spectrum Tincture has a higher CBD content of 600mg for dogs and 200mg for cats and is made using whole plants.

We would recommend a Broad Spectrum for cats, smaller and larger dogs suffering from anxieties, seizures, cancers, tumours, arthritis, skin conditions, allergies, itching and scratching, car sickness and general ageing and wellbeing.

Our CBD Dog Treats and CBD Peanut Butter can be taken in conjunction with the Tincture, as an added benefit or alone without tincture. The Dog Treats and Peanut Butter are not recommended to be given to cats.

All of our products are human grade. They are manufactured using world class human grade ingredients.

People tell me I need to have THC in the product for it to work?

The two most common terms are “CBD isolate” and “full spectrum.”

CBD isolate refers to a pure, concentrated form of CBD, with no other cannabinoids present and Full spectrum CBD refers to a solution that includes all of the naturally occurring plant compounds, including other cannabinoids (like THC), terpenes and essential oils.

When CBD Isolate is used in combination with other terpenes and essential oils, they have a very complimentary effect. Our pure CBD tincture, also used in our dog treats and peanut butter is a wonderful combination of MCT Coconut Oil, 6 different terpenes and CBD Isolate.

Our Broad Spectrum Tincture contains the whole plant, where CBD is the predominant compound found, but you also gain several of the other compounds found in the whole plant, which can include CBG and CBN.

The combination of CBD and all the other compounds work together, which maximises the effect of CBD. There is no THC in Broad Spectrum CBD as well as other compounds found THC is not present in our products and can be toxic to animals, in large doses.

We recommend sticking to THC free products for animals and to only use a full spectrum, under the guidance of a Veterinarian or person of knowledge.
